Fear of Dogs (Cynophobia)

Do you have a fear of dogs? Cynophobia, is considered a specific phobia and can range from mild caution to intense anxiety or panic, often triggered by past experiences or unpredictability.
I'm calm around most dogs, especially the fluffy ones or ones with owners who seem responsible - but I stay alert and a little cautious. My husband is more relaxed and he notices my vigilance. For me, it's not panic, it's just me being tuned into what could happen. Some dogs can be unpredictable, especially when off lead. And not every owner is fully tuned into their surroundings.
We were on the beach last weekend - no one around for miles - and suddenly an Alsatian appeared. My granddaughter ran ahead, and I felt that familiar flash of concern. I've worked with too many clients whose children were bitten to ignore that instinct. Dogs can react to running like it's prey - and in that moment, I just needed to know she was safe.
I have supported clients who have been bitten as a child, who struggle to go for a walk on the promenade where dog walkers frequent. Another client had passed her fear onto to her son - her arm was scarred in an attack. Just like humans, many humans are safe - some less so. So keeping a little caution can be a wise thing.
A little caution can be protective - even necessary. But if that fear starts to steal your freedom...there are ways to shift it. You deserve to feel safe, calm and confident - even when a dog appears unexpectedly.
